ADL Commission Passes Resolution on Anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim World
RULE

WHEREAS, in the past few years there has been a surge in anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim world, with the propagation of anti-Jewish conspiracy theories, stereotypes and defamatory accusations and depictions;

WHEREAS, in those areas in the Arab and Muslim world where anti-Semitism is most prevalent, intense hatred of the West, the United States and secular democracies also abounds;

WHEREAS, Arab and Muslim leadership refuse to recognize the anti-Semitism rampant in their media, in statements made by political leaders, preached in their mosques and religious schools, and widespread in the popular opinion of their people;

WHEREAS, these messages of hate emanating from the Arab and Muslim world are transmitted everyday to living rooms throughout Europe, Africa, North and South America and Asia via satellite television and the internet;

WHEREAS, members of the international community, including many European leaders, are indifferent to the anti-Jewish hatred emanating from the Arab and Muslim world and continue to justify it as a reaction to anger at Israeli policy towards the Palestinians;

WHEREAS, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad’s vehemently anti-Semitic speech before the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC) in October 2003, was received with a standing ovation by the assembled leaders and representatives of the fifty-seven member states of the OIC, and many of these leaders praised the speech to the news media. Among Western leaders, while many immediately condemned Prime Minister Mahathir’s speech, others downplayed the significance of the speech and questioned the need for public comment; Therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Anti-Defamation League calls on the international community to recognize that the time has come for world leaders to stand up and no longer excuse or rationalize anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim world, and denounce and condemn such manifestations as dangerous, morally repugnant, contrary to democratic values and beyond the pale of civilized dialogue; Be it further

RESOLVED, that Western government leaders, business leaders and intellectuals, must ensure that they raise the issue of this anti-Semitism in contacts with their counterparts in the Arab and Muslim world and make clear that such views are not acceptable in the community of nations.
