THE KIBBUTZ

Rooted in the pioneering and egalitarian values of the early Jewish immigrants to Palestine, the Kibbutz developed as a unique model of communal living. Originally Kibbutzim were agricultural enterprises but as time went on, many expanded into industrial and service enterprises as well. In their heyday, the Kibbutzim were the pride of Israeli society and exerted great economic, political and social influence over the country. In recent decades, as Israel increasingly moves away from socialist and communal principles and towards a more open, free-market economy emphasizing individual achievement, the power of the kibbutzim has waned. Today's Kibbutzim are struggling to achieve a balance between the community and the individual and are seeking ways to reconcile the early values of a pioneering way of life with the challenges of contemporary society.
