ADL Letter to Sergio Vieira de Mello

His Excellency Sergio Vieira de Mello
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
OHCHR-UNOG
8-14 Avenue de la Paix
1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland
By Fax: 011 41-22-917-9012
Dear Mr. de Mello:
It has come to our attention that Israel was once again the subject of offensive rebuke at a meeting of a UN Human Rights body, this time during the three-week session of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, which began on July 28. The chairperson, Halima Warzazi, reportedly stated that Israel “sowed death, massive destruction, terror, despair, and perpetuated persecution and torture.” In making these comments, Ms. Warzazi ignored the Commission’s instructions to the Sub-Commission not to discuss specific countries.
We are certain that you find such language highly inappropriate. We have welcomed your assurances that you have gone on record repeatedly on the need to ensure that the rights and dignity of the Israeli people are placed on equal footing as those of the Palestinians. We value our continuing dialogue on issues of intolerance and xenophobia and look forward to hearing your views on this latest incident.
