Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:
"President Mubarak's Peace Ideas" (editorial, June 5) gives far too much credit to President Hosni Mubarak's comments about the Israeli-Palestinian crisis and his role as a potential peacemaker.
Instead of talking about new peace initiatives, President Mubarak should play an active role in ensuring that his region is prepared for peace by working to prevent terrorism and controlling the anti-Semitism and anti-Israel incitement in the Egyptian media.
Instead of talking about visiting Israel only if certain conditions are met, he should pay a long-overdue visit to the country to give the Israelis confidence in his commitment to peace.
