Ted Turner's Response to ADL

June 20, 2002

Mr. Abraham Foxman
National Director Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith

New York, New York 10017

Dear Mr. Foxman:

I sincerely regret any anguish my remarks to The Guardian newspaper may have caused you and the membership of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith. As you may know, the remarks were part of a long and extensive interview given over two months ago. My distress is further compounded by the tragic events of the last two days in Israel.

I hope you understand that I do not morally equate Israel's right to defend itself with the intentional killing of innocent civilians. While I have questioned the policies of the Israeli government in the past, that in no way should be interpreted as an absolution of Palestinian tactics. The crux of my point was the unacceptability of the level of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It deeply pains me that there is so much human loss on both sides.

I have the deepest respect for human life and have dedicated what time and resources I can to improve the human condition. I believe the condemnation of violence, from wherever is may come, is an imperative precondition to a more peaceful world.

As painful as it was to read your letter, I am grateful you took the time to write to me directly to voice your concern. I hope I have addressed your points. I continue to hold ADL and its tenets in the highest regard.

Respectfully,

ADL Letter to Ted Turner
Your statements in the Guardian justifying Palestinian terrorism serve to excuse the violent acts that prevent a secure future for Israelis and Palestinians. More
