ADL Letter to Western Union

  August 2, 2002
Mr. Charlie Fote
Chief Executive Officer
Western Union
Corporate Headquarters
6200 South Quebec Street
Greenwood Village, CO 80111
By Fax: 303-967-7009

Dear Mr. Fote:

We are disturbed that listings for Western Union offices in Israel were deleted from the company’s United Arab Emirates brochures.

According to reports, Vice President for Corporate Communications Peter Ziverts, based in Paris, explained that the listings for Israel were deleted to respect “cultural diversity,” following a request by the company’s local agent in Dubai.

However, removing Israel is a capitulation to unreasonable UAE demands and puts Western Union on a slippery slope. Would you remove Pakistan from such a list if India requested it or vice versa? We think not.

As a communications business, we expect Western Union to be open to communications and not impede them.

We urge you to reverse this decision.

  Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman National Director
