ISRAEL: FAST FACTSIsrael is a small, narrow, semi-arid country. It is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. It is 290 miles long and 85 miles at its widest point. The country includes mountains and plains, fertile fields and desert, often minutes apart from each other. The width of the country, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east, can be crossed by car in about 90 minutes. The length of the country, from Metulla in the north to Eilat in the south, takes about nine hours by car. 34% of world Jewry lives in Israel
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth at about 1,300 feet below sea level. Its waters have the highest level of salinity and density in the world. Israel's climate ranges from temperate to tropical with two distinct seasons: a rainy winter period from November to May and a dry summer season for the next six months. Variations in the intensity of the winter and summer periods depend on regional conditions. Weather extremes range from occasional winter snowfall at higher elevations to periodic hot dry winds in the summer. [ back to top ]
