Flashpoint Lebanon: The Arab Media’s War of Incitement
Introduction
Posted: August 08, 2006
Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and Gaza have been the number one issue in newspapers in the Arab and Muslim world. Not surprisingly, articles, op-eds and caricatures are harshly critical of Israel, with caricatures depicting Israeli soldiers as bloodthirsty thugs determined to murder innocent women and children. A number of newspaper articles claim that Israel’s actions are more heinous than the crimes committed by the Nazis in World War II. Many cartoons and newspaper articles accuse Israel and the U.S. of conspiring together to attack the Lebanese and Palestinian people.
Interestingly, while the majority of opinions coming out of the Arab press condemn Israel for the latest crisis in the Middle East, at the outset of the conflict there was also plenty of blame of Hezbollah for escalating tensions in the region. As the fighting has continued, however, criticism of Hezbollah is no longer visible. The following compilation highlights both the anti-Israel rhetoric throughout the Arab and Muslim press, including examples where criticism of Israel has crossed the line into anti-Semitism, as well as criticism of Hezbollah.
