On Israel’s 60th birthday, the Anti-Defamation League celebrates the creation of a democratic homeland for the Jewish people in a land which Jews have inhabited for thousands of years. And, indeed, in its short history, Israel has given us much to celebrate.

Israel’s vibrant democratic system is a great source of pride, providing all its citizens with access to a modern and effective judicial system and upholding the values of freedom and debate in the media. Israel has also made tremendous advances in the high-tech industry, health care, agriculture, especially low-water farming, and the contributions of Israelis to music, literature and film. Additionally, as a country founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust, Israel has opened its doors to over three million immigrants, and endeavored to ensure they are integrated into Israeli society.
Israel still faces many of the challenges as any thriving democracy, with one significant added dimension – the search for peace and security. Indeed, today, just as in 1948 and despite Israel’s efforts to achieve peace, security remains a very real and serious concern of Israel. In its peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan, and its difficult negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, Israel has demonstrated a sincere desire for peace and its readiness to make the difficult decisions required for peace.
Despite the difficulties it faces, Israel continues to move forward to improve the lives of its citizens and make significant contributions to the entire world.
