The National Socialist Movement (NSM) is currently the largest neo-Nazi group in the United States due primarily to setbacks experienced by other major neo-Nazi groups in the country between 2002 and 2007.
The NSM promotes its virulently anti-Semitic and racist ideology at rallies throughout the country, particularly in the Midwest, and through the group's Website, Internet-based radio programs, white power music company and videogames. While some neo-Nazi groups prefer blazers to brown shirts, this Minneapolis-based hate group is a throwback to the 1960s-era American Nazi Party, from which it descended; members wear Nazi uniforms and openly display swastikas to a degree unusual even among white supremacists. This explicit Nazi imagery apparently has not hurt its stature or standing on the racist right.

Since 2006, the NSM has grown considerably in membership and influence, with dozens of chapters across the country. Part of the reason for the group's growth has been its appeal to racist skinheads and other young white supremacists who join in NSM activities ranging from recruitment to rallies to literature distributions. Though the NSM has grown, the group also experienced setbacks. In June 2006 and again in fall 2007, internal bickering resulted in the loss of key members. Some of these members formed their own small factions, taking followers with them. Despite these reverses, the NSM attempted to maintain its status by holding a number of rallies focusing mostly on immigration and by purchasing a white supremacist social networking Website, New Saxon, in spring 2007. The NSM also continues to promote its online radio shows and its white power music company, NSM88 Records. |
