New York, NY, April 19, 2004 … Abraham H. Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has been appointed a Public Advisor to the U.S. Delegation to the 2004 OSCE Anti-Semitism Conference, April 28-29 in Berlin, Germany. The appointment was announced by Ambassador Edward B. O'Donnell Jr., the State Department's Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues.
A delegation of ADL leaders, including Mr. Foxman, Barbara B. Balser, ADL National Chair, and Joseph Smukler, ADL Chair, International Affairs, will travel to Berlin for the two-day conference of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a follow up to last year's OSCE meeting on anti-Semitism in Vienna.
Mr. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor and author of Never Again? The Threat of the New Anti-Semitism (HarperSanFrancisco, 2003) has played a critical role in shaping U.S. policy and positions on the OSCE process, serving as a Public Member to the 2003 OSCE Anti-Semitism Conference in Vienna and in setting the stage for 2004.
"We hope to have a meeting of the minds in Berlin to take the fight against anti-Semitism to a new level of intensity," said Mr. Foxman. "ADL has been very involved in the planning of the conference and we are working closely with the U.S. State Department and foreign officials to urge the OSCE to implement a system of monitoring of anti-Semitism and to promote programs and practices to counteract expressions of anti-Jewish bigotry."
During the two-day OSCE conference in Berlin, ADL leaders will be actively involved in seeking to promote a strong response to anti-Semitism among the 55 participating OSCE member nations. ADL professionals also will be involved in a special session on anti-Semitism and the Internet.
