ADL COMMENDS DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR
REJECTION OF NATION OF ISLAM COOPERATIVE EFFORTS
New York, NY, July 26, 1996...The Anti-Defamation League
(ADL) today commended the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and its General
Chair Senator Christopher J. Dodd (D-CT) for rejecting any cooperative efforts
with the Nation of Islam. The League had asked for clarification from the
DNC in response to press reports regarding possible collaboration with the
Nation of Islam in a voter registration drive.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, said, " We welcome the DNC's
strong statement that it cannot and will not work with any organization
led by Louis Farrakhan or others who advocate hatred and bigotry. While
the goal of voter registration drives is laudable, we are pleased the DNC
has rejected the possibility of cooperation with the Nation of Islam, an
organization with a long and well-documented history of racism, anti-Semitism
and bigotry."
Mr. Foxman's letter to the DNC and Chairman Dodd's response are attached.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
