ADL Calls for Investigation of Suspicious Mosque Fire in Springfield, MA
Boston, MA, December 9, 2004 ... In reaction to the fire that heavily damaged the al-Baqi Islamic Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, Dennis Kanin and Rob Leikind, respectively ADL's New England Regional Chair and Director, issued the following statement:
We are deeply distressed by the devastation that has resulted from yesterday's fire at the al-Baqi Islamic Center in Springfield. The circumstances call for a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire. In the meantime, our hearts go out to Imam Rasul Seifullah and all the members of his community.
This is an important moment to reiterate ADL's longstanding commitment to fighting intolerance against anyone on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. And, in this spirit, ADL will continue to work vigorously to work against any expression of bigotry towards our Muslim neighbors and friends.
We hope that the al-Baqi Islamic Center community finds comfort and support in this very difficult time. ADL stands ready to support them in any way we are able.
Imam Seifullah, spiritual leader of the al-Baqi Islamic Center, has been an active partner in the Anti-Defamation League's Interfaith Youth Leadership Program for the past two years.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
