ADL Condemns Offensive Anti-Hispanic Election Flier

West Orange, NJ, June 14, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed outrage at an election flier that surfaced during the Democratic primary in Penns Grove, NJ which warned voters "We cannot afford to sit home and let Penns Grove be turned over to the Puerto Ricans."

"Appealing to voters, either positively or negatively, on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender or sexual orientation or identity is contrary to the American ideal," said Etzion Neuer, ADL New Jersey Regional Director.  "Voters should be encouraged to make their decisions based upon their assessment of the qualifications and political positions of candidates.  Appeals on the basis of prejudice should have no part in a mayoral election."

As a 501c3 non-profit corporation, ADL takes no position on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for office.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
