Hamden, CT, March 5, 2009 … The Connecticut Regional Office of the Anti-Defamation League expressed concern about the recent arrest of Reverend James Manship of St. Rose of Lima Church and allegations of anti-Latino harassment, intimidation and profiling in East Haven.
While all the facts are not yet available and we look forward to learning more about the incident and circumstances in East Haven from the parties involved, the charges of persistent profiling and targeting of Latino businesses and individuals, of harassment, intimidation and potential abuse, and of the arrest of Reverend Manship in that context are disturbing and warrant further investigation.
"We are concerned about these troubling allegations," said David Waren, ADL Connecticut Regional Director. "While we recognize and appreciate the challenging and complex job undertaken by law enforcement, it is critical that all members of the community are treated fairly and with respect, regardless of their background.
"We hope that police and town officials will work with members of the East Haven Latino community and others to address these vitally important issues and to develop a comprehensive, effective approach to the concerns expressed."
