ADL Outraged at Espionage Charges Against Iranian Jews Calls for Their Immediate Release
New York, New York, June 8, 1999
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today
expressed shock and outrage at reports that 13 Jews, imprisoned for weeks without cause in
southern Iran, have been charged with spying for the United States and Israel.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
We are outraged that the Iranian authorities have initiated espionage charges
against 13 Shirazi Jews, many of whom are rabbis and teachers. These trumped-up charges
negate Irans claims of moderation and desire to enter the community of nations.
We call on the Government of Iran to release these innocent Jews immediately. We call
on the international community to use all means at its disposal to persuade Iran to
release these Jews.
