ADL Not To Meet Mubarak as Consequence of Egyptian Snub of Israel

New York, NY, March 30, 2004…The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has decided not to attend a Jewish community meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak because of Egypt's offensive refusal to participate at events recognizing the 25-Year Israeli-Egyptian Peace Agreement.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

We find it unconscionable that President Mubarak cancelled Egyptian participation in events in Jerusalem and Washington that recognized the 1979 peace accord between Israel and Egypt. Therefore, we have decided not to participate in a forthcoming meeting requested by President Mubarak with Jewish community leaders at the time of his visit with President Bush in Texas.

If Egypt cannot bring itself to publicly stand with Israel in acknowledgement of the 25 years of peace, then we cannot stand with Egypt at this time. President Mubarak should know that there are consequences for his actions.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
