ADL Shocked that Neo-Nazi Band Set to Perform in Tel Aviv

Update: The concert organizer postponed the scheduled appearance in Tel Aviv of the Austrian neo-Nazi band Der Blutharsch following widespread criticism of the event by Israeli public figures and ADL.

Jerusalem, September 29, 2004...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was shocked to learn that the Austrian neo-Nazi band "Der Blutharsch" is scheduled to perform at the Kosmonaut Club in Tel Aviv on October 9.  ADL sent the following letter to the producers of the concert, Igor and Tanya Simkin and Topheth Prophet, a record company based in Ra'anana, Israel:

This band, which has long utilized obvious Nazi and fascist symbols and imagery in its packaging and song lyrics, is part of a disturbing and growing international trend which introduces the language of racism and anti-Semitism to youth throughout the world.

ADL has long tracked the activities of extremists has found that many hate group members, especially neo-Nazi skinheads, have been drawn to white supremacy by listening to hate rock on the Internet, on CD's and at concerts.

As you are well aware, "Der Blutharsch" has had concerts cancelled in Germany and Switzerland because of their extremist tendencies and has recently drawn the ire of anti-fascist groups in the Netherlands prior to a concert in Leiden, because of their National Socialist orientation.

We find it disturbing and wholly inappropriate that such a group would perform in Israel.  That this performance may upset and offend large numbers of Israeli Holocaust survivors is reason enough to cancel this event.  However, this event legitimizes and adds to the growing business of packaging hate and anti-Semitism in an attractive form that appeals to young people.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
