ADL Welcomes Arrest of Neo-Nazis in Israel

Jerusalem, September 9, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today praised Israel Police for breaking up a so-called "neo-Nazi" cell of immigrant youths allegedly behind a slew of xenophobic assaults on minorities and anti-Semitic attacks in the country. ADL also urged that this case not be used to stereotype a whole community because of a small group of angry immigrant youth.

ADL's Israel Office issued the following statement:

We commend the Israel Police for their energetic pursuit of this gang of "neo-Nazis." The suspicion that immigrants to Israel could have been acting in praise of Nazis and Hitler is an anathema to the Jewish state and is to be repelled.

Members of the group were reportedly from the former Soviet Union and were religiously identified as Christians. They were allowed to immigrate to Israel on the basis of the Law of Return which grants even grandchildren of Jews sanctuary in the Jewish state. The tragic irony in this is that they would have been chosen for annihilation by the Nazis they strive to emulate.

We are disturbed by the cases of young immigrants involved with "neo-Nazi" activity. However, ADL feels that until now the phenomenon appears to be marginal and more of a failure in the absorption process than an organized movement.  The youth are angry at Israelis for holding them in contempt and lash out with hatred.

ADL urges not stereotype a whole community because of the actions of a small group.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
