New York, NY, June 19, 2008 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed Israel's decision to move forward with Egypt's proposal for "calm in the south" and said that Hamas must not use this period to clandestinely build up an arsenal for a future war of terror.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

If implemented as presented, this period will provide a respite for the thousands of Israelis who have been under constant missile, rocket and mortar barrages from Hamas.  It is critical that Hamas not use this period to clandestinely build up its arsenal of rockets and mortars to be used once again to wage a war of terror against Israel.

Israel's pursuit of this plan demonstrates its desire to test all avenues in the search for security and peace for its population.  It also demonstrates Israel's desire to ameliorate conditions for the Palestinian population.   It is clear that should Hamas violate the terms of this proposal and continue its attacks on Israel's southern communities, Israel will have no choice but to respond forcefully.

We hope this arrangement will lead to the swift release of Gilad Shalit, who was kidnapped by Hamas two years ago this month.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Cpl. Shalit and his family.

We express our appreciation to the Government of Egypt for its concerted effort on this initiative and hope that Egypt will also intensify its activities to protect its border with Gaza against the smuggling of arms and ammunition.
