ADL Honors Slain Wall Street Journal Reporter Daniel Pearl
Palm Beach, FL, February 7, 2003 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today posthumously presented its Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize to slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. The award, presented during ADL's National Executive Committee Meeting/90th Anniversary Celebration in Palm Beach, Florida, was accepted on behalf of the Pearl family by Larry Ingrassia, Editor of the Wall Street Journal's Money & Investing Group and a close friend of Daniel Pearl's.
"Daniel Pearl believed in the power of words and their ability to affect meaningful change," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "He believed passionately in the ideals of the First Amendment and of journalism.
"For his tenacity to those beliefs, Danny was tragically murdered by terrorists who believed that his death would send a message that represented the opposite of those ideals," said Mr. Foxman. "His death was a reminder both of the dangers faced every day by foreign correspondents working on the front lines, and of the critical importance of America's First Amendment freedoms."
The South Asia bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, Pearl was in Karachi, Pakistan in January 2002, pursuing a story related to the attempted bombing of an American Airlines jetliner when he was abducted and later killed. After his death, the Pearl family established the Daniel Pearl Foundation to promote cross-cultural understanding through responsible journalism and creative communication - the ideals that inspired Daniel Pearl's work and life.
The ADL award comes with a $10,000 stipend, all of which will go to the Daniel Pearl Foundation.
Past recipients of the ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize include Bernard Shaw, Wolf Blitzer, Lesley Stahl, John Chancellor, Walter Cronkite, Barbara Walters, The Wall Street Journal, William Safire and George Will. The award is endowed by Dwayne O. Andreas, President of the Andreas Foundation.
