ADL Passes Resolution on Sudan Genocides

New York, NY, June 8, 2004…The Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) National Executive Committee passed a resolution in support of the people of Darfur.

The resolution implores the Sudanese government to grant humanitarian access to the people in Darfur and pledged support for efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance, and urged United States to call upon the international community to end the genocide.

The following is the full text of resolution adopted on June 5, 2004:

WHEREAS, the Republic of the Sudan has endured a civil war that spans four decades during which two million people have died. The Sudanese government and its allied forces have committed egregious human rights abuses, including forced starvation through the denial of international humanitarian assistance; abduction and enslavement of women and children; forced displacement of civilians; and bombings of civilian targets and humanitarian facilities.

WHEREAS, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has identified Sudanese government as the world's most violent abuser of the right to freedom of religion and belief and has drawn attention to the Sudanese government's genocidal atrocities against civilian populations in the South and in the Nuba Mountains.

WHEREAS, in the Sudan Peace Act of 2002, Congress found that the Sudanese government had committed acts of genocide.

WHEREAS, since early 2003, a conflict between forces of the Sudanese government and rebel forces in the impoverished Darfur region of the western Sudan has resulted in attacks on civilians and villages; government-backed militias committed atrocities against ethnically and culturally distinct civilian populations.

WHEREAS, the Sudanese government continues to deny humanitarian assistance for the people of the Darfur region; therefore let it be

RESOLVED, that the Anti-Defamation League implores the Sudanese government to grant full, unconditional, and immediate access to Darfur to humanitarian aid organizations, human rights investigators, and international monitors;

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Anti-Defamation League pledges support for efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Darfur; and

URGES the United States to call upon the International Community to take all steps necessary to stop the genocide.
