Palm Beach, FL, February 11, 2005 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today honored New Yorker staff writer and Middle East correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg with the second ADL Daniel Pearl Award at ADL's National Executive Committee Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.  The Award is named in honor of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

"Jeffrey Goldberg embodies everything Daniel Pearl was and everything he worked for," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  "Jeffrey's articles and stories create the most vivid word pictures.  They transform his subjects into three dimensions and make us truly get to know them.  He makes some of the world's most complicated issues understandable. His readers feel they are sitting in on the interview."

Mr. Goldberg is the 2003 winner of the National Magazine Award for reporting, for his coverage of terrorism. He is also the winner of the Overseas Press Club Award for best human rights reporting, for his writing on the crimes of Saddam Hussein, as well as the winner of the Abraham Cahan Prize in Journalism, and the Outstanding International Investigative Reporting Award from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. 

He began his career at The Washington Post. He is a former contributing editor at New York Magazine, for which he covered the Mafia; he also served as the New York bureau chief of the Forward, and has written for The Wall Street Journal, Slate, The New Republic, and The Jerusalem Post.  Prior to joining The New Yorker in 2000, Mr. Goldberg worked for several years as a reporter for The New York Times Magazine.  He served as the 2001 Marie Syrkin Fellow in Letters at the Jerusalem Foundation, and was recently appointed Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, in Washington, D.C.  He frequently appears on PBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and NPR news shows.

The ADL Daniel Pearl Award is endowed by George and Ruth Moss and is given to recognize individuals who are working for a positive impact on the image of Jews and Judaism in the Muslim world.  The first winner of the ADL Daniel Pearl Award was the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist, Thomas L. Friedman.
