ADL Provides Updated Security Manual to Jewish Institutions As High Holidays Approach

New York, NY, September 15, 2005 … With security always a priority for Jewish institutions -- especially during the approaching High Holy Days -- the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has issued a newly revised and expanded security manual and companion DVD that are being distributed to thousands of synagogues, community centers and schools across the country.

"Rather than allowing anxiety and fear to control how we live our lives, the manual contains some of the tools that will help Jewish institutions be a part of their own security solutions," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The manual reflects the philosophy that security is not done randomly, reactively or out of fear, but regularly, rationally and with careful deliberation."

Protecting Your Jewish Institution: Security Strategies for Today's Dangerous World is a comprehensive multimedia security toolkit that contains a wealth of information intended to assist Jewish institutions in training their staff and constituents and promoting security awareness.  The manual and DVD are intended to update and replace the League's longstanding guide Keeping Your Jewish Institution Safe, providing Jewish institutions with the most up-to-date information on security awareness planning and responses to potential threats.  The manual and other timely information on security awareness is available on the League's Web site at www.adl.org/security.  ADL's security information and materials can also be obtained through the League's 30 regional offices.

Among the ADL's recommendations for High Holiday security:

•Think security.  Bear in mind that it is everyone's responsibility to keep a watchful eye on their community institutions.  We must all take responsibility for security.

•Speak to local law enforcement about High Holy Day schedules and special events. Invite officers and the fire marshal to the facility for a security review.

•Coordinate ushering and security staff.  Ensure that ushers understand that they play a critical role in security matters (even where there is a security staff) as they are often used to control access to the sanctuary and are in a position to spot trouble early.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
