New York, NY, May 1, 2006 … In recognition of his outstanding career in the field of journalism and in respect for his contributions to the ideals embodied in the First Amendment, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) honored syndicated Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer with its distinguished ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize.

The award was presented to Mr. Krauthammer on April 23 during the League's Shana Amy Glass National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., at a dinner attended by nearly 500 ADL delegates from across the country.

"In his decades as a public intellectual, Charles Krauthammer has weighed in on almost every important issue at some point, including such hot-button subjects as stem cell research, the debate over creationism and intelligent design and the Iraq war," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  "In some instances, this extraordinarily shrewd political commentator has argued the administration's position better than the administration. ...

"For more than two decades, Charles Krauthammer's brilliant and influential writings have helped frame the shape of American foreign policy," said Mr. Foxman, noting that Mr. Krauthammer coined and developed "The Reagan Doctrine," defined the structure of the post-Cold War in "The Unipolar Moment" (Foreign Affairs 1990/1991) and outlined principles of post 9/11 American foreign policy in his February 2004 Irving Kristol Lecture, "Democratic Realism."

In his acceptance, Mr. Krauthammer said: "I'm really honored to receive your award.  Hubert Humphrey was one of my political heroes.  He and Henry "Scoop" Jackson were great American senators that I've always loved and admired."  Mr. Krauthammer thanked ADL for doing "God's Work" in fighting prejudice, bigotry and anti-Semitism.

Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary, Mr. Krauthammer writes a syndicated column for The Washington Post that appears in more than 150 newspapers.  He is also a monthly essayist for TIME magazine, a contributing editor to The Weekly Standard and the New Republic, a political analyst for Fox News and a weekly panelist on "Inside Washington."

The ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize is endowed by Dwayne O. Andreas, President of the Andreas Foundation, as a tribute to his close friend, the late Hubert H. Humphrey, Mayor of Minneapolis and Vice President of the United States.  The award is presented to institutions or individuals who, like Hubert Humphrey, have made significant and lasting contributions to the preservation and advancement of the ideals embodied in the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Past recipients of the prize include Newsweek International Editor Fareed Zakaria, Walter Cronkite, Barbara Walters, The Wall Street Journal, William Safire, This Week With David Brinkley, George Will, A.M. Rosenthal, The MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour, CNN, political cartoonist Ranan Lurie, Bernard Shaw, Bob Schieffer, Meet The Press, Bernard Lewis, Floyd Abrams, C-SPAN and, posthumously, slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
