ADL Welcomes Decision to Remove Ten Commandments from Alabama Courthouse

Atlanta, August 21, 2003 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) welcomed the unanimous decision by the eight associate justices of the Alabama Supreme Court that overruled their chief justice and ordered that a Ten Commandments monument be removed from its public site in the Alabama Judicial Building.

Deborah Lauter, ADL Southeast Regional Director, commented:  "This action sends a clear message to Justice Moore and his supporters that their position is extreme and will not be tolerated under this country's system of justice.  We are pleased to see that the rule of law will prevail.

ADL had signed on to the amicus curiae brief filed by over 40 multi-faith Alabama clergy, the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, The Interfaith Alliance and the Interfaith Alliance of Alabama.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
