ADL National Executive Committee Passes Resolutions on Immigration, Information Sharing
New York, N.Y., February 24, 2003 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) National Executive Committee passed two key resolutions regarding information sharing and immigration at its annual meeting in Palm Beach.
"We strongly support the actions of the President and his Administration in regard to the War on Terror," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "However, ADL remains concerned that the 'Total Information Awareness Program' lacks key constitutional safeguards. In addition, we fear that asking local police to enforce immigration laws will damage their community relationships and be counterproductive, because it may make residents less likely to volunteer information to the police and to report crimes."
The following resolutions were passed:
- ADL opposes the present proposal to direct local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, calls for careful study as to the most appropriate mechanisms and agencies are for the enforcement of such laws, and supports the traditional role of local law enforcement in the vigorous enforcement of state and local penal laws and keeping the peace.
- ADL strongly opposes the "Total Information Awareness" project proposed by the Administration resulting in the collection, storage, analysis and dissemination of unprecedented amounts of information on American citizens without guidelines, regulations and judicial oversight, which, if implemented, would be an unprecedented invasion of the right of privacy of American citizens.
