ADL Deems 'Reform' of U.N. Human Rights Council 'A Failure' in Wake of Latest Anti-Israel Votes

New York, NY, November 28, 2006 … In the wake of the latest anti-Israel resolutions adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today declared the "reform" process to replace the corrupt U.N. Commission on Human Rights, "an overwhelming failure."

Closing in on six months since its first meeting, the Human Rights Council has held one regular session and three special sessions and has yet to address a single state besides Israel.  The Council passed two resolutions yesterday condemning Israel while ignoring other more pressing problems around the world.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

From the day it opened for business, the U.N. Human Rights Council has never operated with any moral authority.  The Council has failed in its most fundamental purpose: to monitor human rights abuses in all parts of the world.  Instead, it has become a political tool wielded by its Arab and Muslim members who have the power of an automatic majority. The Council has ignored the world's worst human rights atrocities and instead has pursued Israel for political gain.

The effort as part of the U.N. reform campaign to replace the corrupt Commission on Human Rights with the revamped Human Rights Council, while well intentioned, has been an overwhelming failure.

Canada is the only country that has consistently voted against the tide of anti-Israel resolutions. Sadly, no other member state has had the courage to join Canada's principled stand.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
