15In a Tel Aviv cafe, a suicide bomber killed three and wounded dozens. . . . On a
crowded street in Jerusalem, Hamas suicide bombers killed five Israelis. . . . In Algeria
in September 1997 alone, more than 500 civilians were killed in massacres and bombings
attributed to the Armed Islamic Group. . . . In Denver, Timothy J. McVeigh was convicted
of murder in the bombing of the Oklahoma City Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, which
killed 168 people and injured 850 others.
Terrorism knows no bounds. The Anti-Defamation League, with its William and Naomi
Gorowitz Institute on Terrorism and Extremism and its Leon and Marilyn Klinghoffer
Memorial Foundation, has continued to play a key role in combating the deadly threat by
educating, by promoting effective legislative counterterrorism initiatives, and by
countering terrorism in the Middle East, the U.S. and the world over.
A case in point is the Federal law passed in 1996 requiring the U.S. State Department
to identify foreign terrorist organizations; for months, however, the Department declined
to do so. Finally, after continuous campaigning by ADL and other groups, the Department
officially named 30 organizations in October 1997 -- including Hamas and Hezbollah. It is
a crime to provide funds, weapons and other material support to groups on the State
Department list, and members and representatives of those groups are ineligible for U.S.
visas.
