On-line Hate
The growing number of hate-oriented sites on the World Wide Web
presents a clear danger worldwide because
of the easy accessibility of these sites. Their creators are able to connect easily with like-minded
organizations and to draw in new members, especially young people. But is it possible to counter
these sites without advocating censorship?
The League has an answer: ADL HateFilter,
a new software product which prevents children from accessing Web sites maintained by racists, neo-Nazis, militias,
Holocaust deniers, and other extremist groups. ADL HateFilter is similar to other software that blocks children's access

to pornographic or other inappropriate Web sites. But there is a significant difference: ADL HateFilter directs the user
to the ADL Web site, www.adl.org, to get accurate, regularly updated information about organized hate groups.
These include both well-publicized haters like David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan, and lesser-known extremists, such as
white-supremacist women who exploit the language of feminism for their own ends.
ADL's Research Department constantly evaluates and analyzes the Web sites, publications, activities and media events of organized hate groups, both in the U.S. and abroad.
