The Middle East
Throughout 1998, ADL played a key role as interpreter of events in Israel for the American Government, public and Jewish
community. Educating the American public about the complexities of issues ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian Wye Memorandum,
to the conflict with Iraq, to anti-Semitism in the Palestinian Authority and elsewhere in the Arab world, and to the conversion
controversy in Israel, ADL also works to combat efforts to delegitimize Israel by the Arab world, the international community
and the media.
Through the Eugene Warner Middle East Lecture Series, prominent Israelis were brought to the U.S. to brief Americans on the
peace process and Israeli politics.
Jerusalem Office Recognizing the cleavages in Israeli society between left and right,
religious and secular, new-immigrant and sabra, ADL's office in Jerusalem speaks out against prejudice and intolerance
within Israeli society. The A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute is active in Israel with the Israel Defense Forces, Arab and
Israeli educators, health professionals, members of youth groups and other individuals who undergo our anti-bias training program.
Missions ADL delegations met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasir Arafat and other political leaders in the Middle East, discussing issues of concern to the League, including
the state of the peace process, anti-Semitism and anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian media. In November 1998, ADL
leadership went on a historic mission to Saudi Arabia and discussed the peace process and other related issues with key Saudi leaders.
