Anti-Abortion Extremist Sentenced in Pennsylvania

A federal court in Pennsylvania has sentenced a convicted anti-abortion extremist to 33 years in prison for carjacking, robbery and weapons charges in four states.

Clayton Lee Waagner, was sentenced on December 12, 2006.  Waagner, 50, who once stated that he was on a mission from God to kill abortion providers, was already serving an extensive federal prison sentence for mailing over 550 letters with fake anthrax in them to clinics that provided abortions, or abortion counseling, in 24 states in 2001.

Waagner pleaded guilty in April 2006 to a carjacking in Mississippi, weapons charges in Mississippi and Tennessee, and bank robbery in Harrisburg and Morgantown, West Virginia. The cases were consolidated and the new sentence will run concurrent with his prior federal sentences.

Waagner was originally convicted in 2001 of possession of a firearm by a felon and interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle in connection with a 1999 plot to murder abortion doctors.  After his conviction, Waagner escaped from a county jail in Illinois while awaiting sentencing.  As a fugitive, Waagner traveled around the country, committing several bank robberies and carjackings.  He also threatened to kill as many people who performed abortions as he could.  With all of his various convictions, Waagner's projected release date is not until 2044.
