A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute is for people who share a community - be
it a school, workplace, neighborhood or campus. The program started in Boston in 1985 when
the Anti-Defamation League and WCVB-TV joined together to fight prejudice. From the start,
this remarkably effective way to promote diversity was embraced. It changed hearts and
minds, and it quickly spread across the nation - and beyond.
The A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute now operates in the United States and in cities
abroad.
Our Goals
- To recognize bias and the harm it inflicts on individuals and society
- To explore the value of diversity and improve intergroup relations
- To combat racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of prejudice and bigotry
Our Divisions
Who We Are
The Anti-Defamation League is an established, more than 85-year-old agency that fights
bigotry worldwide through its Regional and Satellite Offices here and abroad. That means:
- A national network of professionals trained to respond to hate
- Connections to local, state and Federal legislative initiatives
- Alliances with policy makers, government leaders and civil rights agencies
- Access to a comprehensive research and resource facility
- Availability of leading experts in a wide range of fields
- Programs within the context of larger social change
How We Work
Every community can be strengthened by the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute. We work to
reinforce existing coalitions, create new alliances and help establish anti-bias
long-term initiatives. This includes:
- Training Programs
- Needs assessment
- Simulation activities
- Videos
- Role playing
- Curriculum
- Case studies
- Other resources
- Discussion groups
Our methods are practical, experiential, and hands-on. They involve one person talking
to another, discovering similarities, respecting differences.
When one town had a series of hate-related incidents, the school district looked to the
A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute for guidance and resources. We:
- Identified issues surfacing as a result of the incidents
- Set up programs for students K-12, along with teachers, parents, administrators, local community organizations, law enforcement authorities and political leaders
- Implemented anti-bias curriculum, ongoing leadership training and dialogue to improve the way groups interact on a daily basis
