Eligibility
Student Achievement Awards
Open to university and graduate students majoring in film and television.
New! Special Jury Award
This year the ADL Dore Schary Awards announces a new category. The 17th Annual Awards will be expanded to include recognition for amateur and professional filmmakers 25 years of age or younger. Entry may include, but is not limited to, narrative, documentary, experimental and animated productions.
For productions dealing with themes that communicate the harm to society from hatred, bigotry, racism, and/or anti-Semitism, and themes that support diversity, are eligible
With the exception of actors in dramatic films and/or videos (who can be professionals), all phases of production must be completed by student personnel.
Productions Based on Previously Published Works of Fiction are Not Eligible.
Entry Requirements
All productions should be submitted in videocassette format (1/2 inch VHS), with a completed entry form and a supporting letter from a faculty sponsor.
Entries will be accepted between January 1, 2003 and May 28, 2003.
Any film and video productions that have been completed since January 1, 2001 can be submitted.
Film and Video Competition
Productions shot on film should be transferred onto videotape for entry and preliminary judging.
Students should classify their video or film projects into one of two categories:
1. Narrative
2. Documentary

Two $2,000 prizes can be awarded, one for each category.

Judging Standards
The Anti-Defamation League, which sponsors the awards, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry. Founded in 1913, ADL works to secure justice and fair treatment for all people.
The ADL Dore Schary Awards for film and video productions will be based on the following considerations:
1. Subjects such as prejudice and discrimination, ethnic and minority portraits, encountering life's problems with bias or intolerance, or insights into the diversity of different cultures, races, religions, genders, or social groups.
2. Imagination and creativity
3. Technical excellence
Dore Schary (1905-1980) was one of Hollywood's most distinguished writers, directors and producers. His 372 film credits include many issue-oriented films such as Boys Town; Crossfire, the prestigious 1947 film dealing with anti-Semitism; The Boy With Green Hair, a plea for tolerance; and a host of other motion pictures that are eloquent testimony to his love of people and his passionate respect for their diversity.
Judging
Finalists will be judged by the Dore Schary Awards Committee, comprised of film and television industry and human relations professionals. Pre-screening committees will evaluate entries to select the finalists. Winners will be announced in October 2003.
Shipping Instructions
It is suggested that entries be insured and sent by registered mail.
Indemnification
All reasonable care will be taken to protect films and videocassettes from loss or damage, but neither the Anti-Defamation League nor its judging committees can assume liability. Sorry entries can not be returned.
