Background/History

Cross-burnings (called "cross-lightings" by Klansmen) have long been a traditional symbol for the Ku Klux Klan, used both in Klan rituals and in attempts to intimidate and terrorize victims of the Klan. Cross-burnings originated with the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan in 1915 and have been around ever since.
