Background/History |
Runes are the characters that comprised an ancient Germanic alphabet.
There were several versions of this alphabet used for writing, divination
and magic. Runic Alphabets were employed throughout northern Europe,
Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 300 to 1600.
Some neo-Nazis and white supremacists use the alphabet because they
believe it is representative of Nordic or "Aryan" culture.
Prison inmates who belong to white supremacist gangs often use the
alphabet in written correspondence so that their communications
won’t be understood by prison authorities. Runes can also be found
in hate graffiti and displayed on jewelry sold on white supremacist
web sites.
