Setting Up ADL HateFilter®on Your Computer
Now that you have put ADL HateFilter® on your computer, you must set up (configure) the program so that it works the way you want it to.
Starting and Configuring ADL Hate Filter®
- To use ADL HateFilter® for the first time, double-click on the ICRAfilter icon (the blue "i") on your Windows task bar (which usually can be found on the bottom of your screen).
- A window asking for the Control password will open. Enter the password you gave the program when you installed it.
Configuring the Program
- Once you enter the correct password, you will see the Control screen. You will see a number of sections accessible from this screen: "Rules," "Lists," "Templates," "Services" and "Security."
- If you want to block ONLY those sites identified by ADL as hateful, you MUST choose "Allow" for every category in the "Rules" and "Services" sections of the Control screen. Furthermore, you MUST add no sites to the "Block" or "Allow" lists in the "Lists" section of the Control screen, and you MUST activate no templates other than those created and distributed by ADL.
- In the "Rules" section of the Control screen, you can choose to block or allow access to sites on the basis of the way sites describe themselves. Many sites have chosen to describe themselves using terms developed by ICRA. ADL HateFilter® 2.0, which is powered by ICRA, can read and understand these terms. For example, a site may describe itself as containing "Promotion of Tobacco Use" and "Passionate Kissing." If you have chosen in the "Rules" section to block sites that contain "Promotion of Tobacco Use," ADL HateFilter® 2.0 will block access to the site because it can see that the site describes itself as containing "Promotion of Tobacco Use." The result of any choices you make in the "Rules" section is not the responsibility of the Anti-Defamation League.
- In the "Lists" section of the Control screen, you can choose to block or allow access to specific Web sites that you have identified. For example, if you add a Web site to the "Allow" list, that site would be accessible, even if it described itself as containing "Mild Expletives" and you chose in the "Rules" section to block sites that contain "Mild Expletives." The result of any choices you make in the "Lists" section is not the responsibility of ADL.
- In the "Templates" section of the Control screen, you can choose to install and activate the filtering preferences of one or many trusted third-party organizations, such as ADL. The ADL HateFilter® template, which blocks access only to the ADL HateFilter® list of hate sites, is already installed and activated. ADL is responsible only for the selection of sites that are filtered by this template and updated versions of this template. ADL is not responsible for the filtering caused by any other template you choose to install and activate. Other templates may contain lists of sites to block, lists of sites to allow, and/or a set of filtering "Rules" that are based on the way sites describe themselves. A list of templates can be found on the ICRA Web site.
- In the "Services" section of the Control screen, you can choose to block or allow access to the different types of online services that available on the Internet, such as the World Wide Web, E-mail, newsgroups, and Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The result of any choices you make in the "Services" section is not the responsibility of ADL.
- You can also set up a different, password-protected set of filtering rules for each user of your computer. For example, you configure ADL HateFilter® so that one set of filtering choices applies to you, another applies to your teenager, and a third applies to your pre-teen. For more information about this option, please see "Setting up the filter for more than one user" in the "Help" section.
- If you need help, click "Help" in the upper right-hand corner of the Control screen. If you do not find the answer you are looking for, feel free to e-mail the Internet Content Rating Association (IRCA) at support@icra.org for assistance. If you contact ICRA, please include the following information: your operating system (Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 etc.), your browser & version (Internet Explorer 5.5, Netscape 4.7, etc.), the exact details of the problem, and information about how to contact you. You will receive a response from ICRA within five business days. Telephone support is not available.
