Conference for Descendants of Shoah Survivors

Chicago 2002 Living the Legacy, a gathering and conference of descendants of Shoah survivors and their families will be held in Chicago, June 30 to July 2, 2002. It will be the first international, family-oriented conclave for the children and grandchildren of survivors developed to explore "what is our legacy, how are we living it and how does the legacy continue on through the generations?"

Yad Vashem, launches campaign to record the names of all Holocaust victims.

Yad Vashem  the Israel Holocaust Museum, is launching a concerted campaign in Israel and abroad to record for all time the names of all Holocaust victims. Known as Pages of Testimony, this project serves as a symbolic tombstone for each Jewish victim who died anonymously.

Since this initiative began, more than 40 years ago, the lives of more than 3 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust have been memorialized. To preserve the lives of the nearly 3 million victims who have not yet been registered in the Hall of Names, Yad Vashem is renewing this ambitious effort, aiming to complete Pages of Testimony in the year 2000.

Eli Zborowski, chairman of the American Society for Yad Vashem, says: "The victims deserve to be remembered not as cold anonymous numbers, but as individual human beings. The Pages of Testimony will preserve the unique identity and personal dignity that the murderers tried so hard to obliterate."

Our family members went to their deaths without shrouds, memorial prayers or gravestones. To safeguard their memory and to give them an everlasting resting place, please send in your Pages of Testimony.

Pages of Testimony are available in 14 languages. The forms can be downloaded and reprinted from Yad Vashem's Web site at: www.yadvashem.org.il.

Compensation and Recovery of Assets

France: Compensation to Be Paid by the French Government to the Orphans of Jews Deported From France

Requirements:

• Being fatherless and/or motherless
• Having been under the age of 21 at the time of the deportation of the father and/or the mother
• Compensation will be paid whatever the present nationality or place of residence
• Not having been compensated by the Germans for the same reason.

Indicate your civil status (last name, first name, date and place of birth) and the civil status of the deported parent(s) and when they were deported. You will receive an acknowledgment and when the administrative measures of the decision taken by the Prime Minister will have been implemented, you will then receive a form to be filled out.

New Restriction on the Claim of Polish Property

The Sejm has imposed a current Polish citizenship restriction on individuals who will be entitled to restitution of property taken by the Polish People's Republic during and after World War II. Seven United States Senators have written a letter of protest to Marshal Plazynski. The cosigners are Senators Charles E. Schumer, Edward M. Kennedy, Patrick J. Leahy, Daniel K. Inouye, Arlen Specter, Gordon Smith and Dianne Feinstein. You can join this protest by asking your legislator to write to:
