Dear Ms. Koppel:
We wish to draw to your attention to an omission and erroneous conclusion in
your report on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process which aired
on October 16 during the 8:00 PM CNN The World Today broadcast.
In your report you stated, "When Camp David ended without an agreement,
Palestinian despair eventually led to violence."
This statement implies that both sides were responsible for the failure at
Camp David and that this failure was the cause of the current violence by the
Palestinians. In fact, it was Prime Minister Ehud Barak who had put a number of
proposals on the table at Camp David, but unfortunately Chairman Yasir Arafat
walked away from these proposals. By omitting this fact, you appear to validate
Palestinian frustrations and violence.
That statement was immediately followed by PLO Representative to the U.S.,
Hassan Abdel Rahman, explaining that the Palestinians have "waited for
seven years for the peace process to produce a qualitative change in their
lives. It did not." His statement appears to back up your "cause and
effect" and justify the recent violence by the Palestinians, which we are
sure was not your intent.
At this time of turmoil in the Middle East it is important to be factually
accurate.
