| The Annapolis Conference |
On November 27, 2007, representatives of 46 nations gathered at Annapolis, Maryland for a U.S.-hosted conference intended to renew Israeli Palestinian peace talks. Notably, the conference was attended by Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Syria, none of whom have diplomatic relations with Israel.
At the opening of the one-day conference, President Bush read a Joint Agreement signed by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in which they stated their mutual desire for peace, declaring: “In furtherance of the goal of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security, we agree to immediately launch good-faith bilateral negotiations in order to conclude a peace treaty, resolving all outstanding issues, including all core issues without exception, as specified in previous agreements.”
Israel and the Palestinian Authority pledged to renew negotiations – with the leaders meeting bi-weekly to negotiate – with the goal of a final status agreement by the end of 2008. The parties pledged to fulfill the obligations set out in the 2002 Roadmap, with the United States serving as monitor of implementation. (The Roadmap has the Quartet serving this purpose.) |
