ADL Letter to CNN
Note: ADL communicated with CNN on December 10 regarding the program Q&A with Jim Clancy, which is carried on CNN International and seen around the world, including in Israel. ADL's Israel office received numerous complaints regarding the December 4 episode, which featured various guests discussing the topic, "Is the Media Fueling the Middle East Crisis." The following letter outlined ADL's concerns.

  December 10, 2001

On December 4, Q&A with Jim Clancy aired a program on the topic, "Is the Media Fueling the Middle East Crisis." Hosted by Zain Vergee, (as Mr. Clancy was on assignment in Afghanistan) the following guests appeared in the order listed: Hafez Al-Mirazi, Washington Bureau Chief, Al Jazeera; Baria Almuddin, Foreign Editor, Al Hayatt; Ghassan Khatib, Jerusalem Media Communications Center and David Horowitz, Editor, The Jerusalem Report.

Rather than speak to the important and relevant subject on the media in the Middle East, the first three guests used virtually all of their time bashing Israel rather than speaking to the issue at hand. However, David Horowitz did address, in a thoughtful and intelligent manner, how the Hebrew language media is covering the crisis and what the ramifications of that coverage has in Israel, but he was a lone voice on the show's stated topic.

Ms. Vergee was unable or unwilling stop the first three guests from their "blame game" and the viewer was left with almost one half-hour in which Israel was criticized unceasingly without any balance, context or limits. So unbalanced was the program that it was truly shocking. In this case, CNN viewers were not served well.
