To the Editor:
Charley Reese once again demonstrates his clearly one-sided understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and ignores the main reason why there is no peace between Israel and the Palestinians: 16 months of continuous Palestinian terror and violence ("Let's set a timetable for Israel to withdraw from Arab lands," March 10).
Contrary to the picture Mr. Reese chooses to paint of Israel as an evil "occupier," Israel is eager to resolve the conflict and did indeed make far-reaching peace proposals at Camp David and then again at Taba, even as the violence raged. Even opinion polls to this day, despite the horrors of suicide terrorism, reveal that Israelis are still ready to offer the Palestinians the opportunity for an independent state despite concerns about the persistent hatred of Israel and its very existence among Palestinians.
Rather than engage in his usual finger pointing and hyperbole, if Mr. Reese truly wants an end to the violence in the Middle East, he should call upon Palestinian terrorists to cease their brutal suicide and shooting attacks on Israel citizens and return to the negotiating table to ensure a better future for both themselves and the Israelis.
