To the Editor:

J. J. Goldberg creates a false sense of division within the American Jewish community and between American Jews and Israel concerning the current Middle East unrest ("A Constituency Ready for Peace," Op-Ed, Nov. 29). In fact, all these parties want America to play a role because they hope that it can persuade the Palestinians to end the violence and return to the negotiating table.

When it comes to negotiations, it is also fair to say that organizations and individuals in the Jewish community believe that all sides will have to make compromises for peace.

What is particularly odd is that Mr. Goldberg ignores the most significant trend in Israel and among American Jews: that more and more question whether the Palestinians have truly accepted Israel's legitimacy and are willing to live in peace with Israel. In the last year and a half, the Palestinians have rejected a generous peace proposal; have initiated violence and terrorism; and have returned to the most vicious anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda.

If all that changes, Israelis and American Jews will support efforts to arrive at a real and secure peace.
