Extremism Trainings in Southern California

Posted: July 11, 2008

An ADL expert presented a series of briefings to law enforcement agencies in Southern California on Islamic extremist activity in the U.S., as well as on extremist environmentalist and animal rights movements.  The trainings were held in Los Angeles, co-sponsored by the FBI; in Orange County, co-sponsored by the Irvine Police Department; and in San Diego.

Over 200 law enforcement officers received training over the three days. Attendees represented a variety of organizations including the FBI, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angles Sheriff's Department, Torrance Police Department, LA Mayor's office, California Housing and Transportation Agency, LA Joint Regional Intelligence Center, Beverly Hills Police Department, Pasadena Police Department, U.S. Attorney's Office, Arcadia Police Department, Ventura County District Attorney, Bakersfield Police Department, LA County Police Department, San Bernardino Police Department, UCLA Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Orange County District Attorney, LAX Police Department, Orange County Sherriff's Department, U.S. Marine Corps, Seal Beach Police Department, Federal Air Marshal Service, Cypress Police Department, Irvine Police Department, Anaheim Police Department, DEA, Westminster Police Department, U.S. Navy, Garden Grove Police Department, U.S. Probation and Parole Office, and Kern County Sheriff's Department.

In Los Angeles and San Diego, the ADL training was titled From Eco-Terrorism to Homegrown Jihad: A Look at Domestic Extremism. One part of the presentation provided an overview of the ideology, radicalization process and criminal activity associated with extremists motivated by radical interpretations of Islam. The second part of the training focused on extremist environmentalist and animal rights movements, which have claimed responsibility for hundreds of crimes and acts of terrorism, including arson, bombings and vandalism, causing more than $175 million in damage.  In recent years, the deliberate targeting of individuals by these movements has become more widespread and violent.

The briefing in Orange County entitled, Homegrown Jihad: Radicalization, Activity & Case Studies, was an expanded discussion on the growing number of American citizens who are motivated to plot criminal activity based on their radical interpretations of Islam.
