Right-Wing Extremism Training for Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County
ADL experts presented a lecture on domestic terrorism and hate crimes to 25 law enforcement officers in Granada Hills, California.
The training was sponsored by the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County (POALAC), which is comprised of members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
Attendees represented law enforcement agencies from throughout Southern California, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Beverly Hills Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Oxnard Police Department, Hermosa Beach Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
The first half of the presentation focused on the nature and prevalence of hate crimes, including ways to distinguish whether or not a crime is hate-motivated, who is perpetrating these crimes, and how victims and law enforcement officers can respond. The latter half focused on right wing extremism, including neo-Nazi and white supremacist organizations, individuals, criminal trends, tattoos, symbols, and use of the Internet and social networking sites to recruit.
