Counter-terrorism Training for California Law Enforcement
Posted: June 10, 2004
More than 50 southern California law enforcement officials attended a training seminar in San Diego on "Responding to Incidents of Terrorism: Key Issues for First Responders." This was the second session in a year long training series titled "Counter-Terrorism: Critical Skills for Law Enforcement," which is being jointly sponsored by ADL, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the San Diego Police Department.
The seminars provide information to police on global terrorism, domestic extremism, and a tactical approach to the issue of counter-terrorism.
Col. Avshalom Peled, Head of the Operations and Training Division of the Israel Border Guard, was the featured speaker. He spoke about what the Israeli police do "from the moment we get the call about a potential attack," emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence sharing in the tactical response to terrorism.
A special agent from the FBI summarized the United States' national response plan for nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons attacks, and procedures for federal participation in local emergency responses. An instructor from the Center for Domestic Preparedness trained participants to better recognize improvised explosive devices.
