Duke on Solidarity Mission to Syria
Posted: November 23, 2005
David Duke traveled to Syria at the end of November, where he expressed solidarity with the Syrian people and the Assad regime in the face of increasing international pressure over the country’s support for terror. In a November 21, 2005 speech in Damascus, Duke attacked pro-Israel groups in the U.S., which he alleged control the mass media and have undue influence on the U.S. government. The Syrian news agency SANA reported that Duke also denounced Israel for possessing weapons of mass destruction, and pledged to convey the position of the "peace-loving" Syrian people to the broader international community. It also claimed that Duke's speech was attended by members of the Syrian parliament.
Duke also participated in a November 24, 2005 mass solidarity protest, and his speech was aired on Syrian national television. He continued his earlier comments, praising President Bashar al-Assad and adding “It is not just the West Bank of Palestine…that [is] occupied by Zionists, but Washington D.C., and New York, and London.” He led the crowd in chanting “No war for Israel,” and claimed to represent like-minded citizens in the Western world. Syrian parliament member Muhammad Habash was quoted in media reports thanking David Duke for giving Syrians a more positive view of the American people.
