California Woman Targeted by Extreme Animal Rights Movement

Posted: December 29, 2004

The home and car of an employee with the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services were vandalized in an apparent attack by animal rights extremists.

"ALF eyes on you" was spray-painted on Jackie David's home in Sylmar, California, on December 24, 2004.  "ALF" stands for Animal Liberation Front, the nation's most active extreme animal rights group.

Jerry Vlasak, a spokesman for the Canoga Park-based North America Animal Liberation Press Office, said that "typically, these acts occur when the normal channels are not successful and people become frustrated."  Vlasak is a member of the Animal Defense League, a radical animal rights group that carries out various "direct actions," including home demonstrations.

As part of its intimidation tactics, the Animal Defense League's Los Angeles Chapter has a Web site that includes photographs of Jackie David, as well as the location of her office and phone number.  David is one of several Animal Services employees listed on the Web site under the banner "players/targets," which includes images of bullet holes around employee's names.

An "action alert" on the Web page, posted a day before the vandalism, claims that Animal Services employees are "doing nothing to improve the plight of the unwanted animals" and asks readers to help "force Jackie David to either start doing her job or to move on because her brand of incompetence will NOT be tolerated any longer."
