A Canadian court has ordered the extradition of suspected ecoterrorist Michael J. Scarpitti to the United States to face arson charges. 

On July 7, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled that there was enough evidence against Scarpitti, who had been a fugitive on the FBI’s most-wanted list for more than 19 months, to extradite him to face federal charges.

Scarpitti (a.k.a. Tre Arrow) was arrested in March 2004 after allegedly trying to steal bolt cutters from a home improvement store in Vancouver.  

An FBI warrant for Scarpitti’s arrest was issued in August 2002 after he and three others were charged in a June 2001 logging-truck arson (the three other coconspirators pleaded guilty to the firebombing and are serving federal prison terms). Scarpitti is also suspected of being involved in an April 2001 arson of three Mack trucks belonging to a Portland mining company.

The FBI claims Scarpitti is associated with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), one of the most active ecoterrorist movements in the U.S.  

Scarpitti’s lawyer indicated he would appeal the extradition decision.
