On July 29, ADL provided hate crimes training to all officers in the Gloucester, MA, Police Department. ADL trainers worked with the officers in three separate group sessions from early morning through the night shift. While there have only been a handful of incidents with anti-Semitic overtones in the community, this program was a pro-active effort. The Gloucester Police Chief wanted to be sure officers were prepared to respond to a hate incident of any kind. The training is a follow-up to a more limited ADL hate crimes training in which the department had participated, along with 200 other police departments throughout Massachusetts, in 2000. This instruction is the latest in a current series of law enforcement training sessions in ADL’s New England Region. In June, ADL provided similar training to chiefs and senior detectives in 15 Massachusetts communities.
